The type of salt you use in your water softener does make a difference. While all salts will in theory soften hard water, purer salts will do so more efficiently. Salts that include rock and earth will leave a sludgy residue inside a water softener, requiring the user to clean it more often. This can cause issues especially in those cabinet models which are more difficult to clean, as well as causing blockages.
Evaporated salt is the most expensive sodium chloride available, but it is also the purest and most efficient. Pure salts last longer than salts with impurities as they won't clog up your water softener system, even with long-term use. Pure salt also easily dissolves in the softener, reducing the risk of bridging or clogging and making the entire system more efficient. In order for the salt to be made into blocks or tablets a caking agent needs to be used. Lower quality water softener salt tends to use more of this caking agent meaning that the resulting salt is less pure. When it comes to tablet salt, the higher quality product is formed as round pellets which, unlike squared shapes, help to prevent corners rubbing and breaking off into dust and small fragments within the bag.
