Boiling water taps are definitely one of the most exciting and useful home gadgets around. They give you instant boiling hot water straight from your tap with no need to wait for a kettle to boil to make hot drinks or to cook pasta, vegetables and rice. There is no doubt that they are a great addition to your kitchen but many people can be put off by the initial purchase and installation cost. Can a boiling water tap save you money however? Yes, there are definitely energy cost savings to be made. Particularly welcome at the moment with the recent huge increase in household energy bills!

Heat retention

Once they have boiled, kettles will rapidly lose heat which can amount to 25% of the energy used. In contrast, the water tanks used for boiling water taps are designed to hold large amounts of boiling water ready to be dispensed and are therefore heavily insulated.

Water usage

With a boiling water tap, you will only ever use the exact amount of water that you need. It's all too easy to overfill a kettle meaning that you are often boiling water each time that is in excess to what is actually required. It may not sound like much, but the extra energy used to boil this extra water will soon add up! Particularly if you are boiling your kettle several times a day.

Cost per cuppa

It can cost an average of 3p every time you boil your kettle. When you consider that on average the people of Great Britain get through 165 million cups of tea a day, you can see that this can really add up! For a boiling water tap however, it will cost just 11p to run per day. Don't forget, as you are not just using your boiling water tap for hot drinks but also for cooking, sterilising etc, this is much better value for money.

Multi purpose

Of course, you could argue that a boiling water tap costs significantly more that a kettle to start with. There are so many other advantages to having one installed however:

  • They are great for people with mobility problems as they will no longer have to lift and pour a heavy kettle.
  • Many boiling water taps also filter your water leaving you with a much better taste than standard tap water.
  • Many boiling tap models come with a flexi hose. Really handy for cleaning or for filling a pan at the side of the sink.
  • Unlike your kettle, boiling water taps come with safety features which mean that a child cannot accidentally turn them on and scald themselves.
  • With a boiling water tap you will have more space in your kitchen as there is no need to take up space on your worktop with a kettle.
