Good for your health

Filters
  • We all know that drinking plenty of water is great for our health. The benefits are numerous, with skin hydration, nutrient absorption, weight loss, detoxification and improved digestion. Drinking pure water also helps to support the immune system and mental health function. Water filtration removes water impurities and dangerous contaminants such as chlorine, disinfection byproducts and heavy metals such as mercury, lead, and arsenic. Filtering water removes a variety of these impurities, resulting in a more refreshing and enhanced flavour and making it far more pleasent to get your 8 glasses a day.

Good for your skin and hair

Softeners
  • There are several reasons why soft water makes your skin silky soft and smooth. The minerals in hard water cause your skin to lose moisture which can lead to conditions such as dry skin and eczema. Hard water also makes soap less effective, leaving behind a residue on the skin which can make it feel itchy and dry. Soft water works far better with soap, lathering and rinsing away beautifully leaving skin soft, smooth and glowing and without the need for excessive use of moisturisers. Skin itchiness and dryness is not the only problem when using hard water, it can also clog your pores and result in the overproduction of oils leading to breakouts and acne. The benefits of soft water mean it won’t dry your skin and strip it of its natural oils, leading to beautifully clear skin and fewer breakouts.
  • Hard water and shampoo just don’t work well together. It is difficult to get a good lather and it doesn’t rinse out properly, building up on your hair and leaving it dull, limp and hard to style. This may cause you to wash your hair more frequently in order to remove the residue however this can have the opposite effect, exacerbating the problem and resulting in further buildup. The buildup of minerals will also mean that less moisture can effectively enter the hair shaft resulting in frizzy, coarse and dry hair which requires more conditioning products. Hard water can also make your scalp feel dry, itchy and uncomfortable. Soft water on the other hand does not allow minerals and residue to build up, lathers beautifully with shampoo, and rinses clean away leaving your hair and feeling silky smooth and manageable and your scalp soothed and refreshed.

Good for the environment

  • Bottled water is a source of pollution as it takes the plastic bottle 300 years to degrade. Not just that, a vast quantity of water is wasted due to it taking three times as much water to produce the bottle itself than it does to fill the bottle. By filtering tap water at your home or business you will be helping the environment as you will be able to enjoy the clean, pure taste without resorting to buying bottled water. Aside from the obvious cost implications, this will mean that you will be getting through an increased amount of plastic containers, many of which are single use plastics and cannot be recycled.
Softeners
  • In hard water areas, soap and detergent use is more than doubled. This is because of the high mineral content which means it is harder to get a good soap lather and also rinse away. Not just that, hard water causes limescale and soap scum build up on surfaces which will then require a vast range of cleaning products, many of which contain harsh chemicals, to keep clear and clean. The chemicals and pollutants contained in these products end up being released into our water stream which has an obvious impact on environmental benefits. Soft water does not contain these minerals meaning that you will need less detergents, less cleaning materials and therefore less use of harsh chemicals.
  • When using hard water, the minerals that it contains will accumulate on the internal surfaces of boilers and heating elements causing scale buildup and impairing efficiency. This scale buildup will reduce the equipment’s ability to heat the surrounding water, causing it to consume more energy (with just a 1mm increase in scale thickness reducing the efficiency by an average of 6%). Latest Government figures estimate a saving of up to 12% on water heating bills when using soft water instead so by having a water softener installed, the resulting reduction in energy use means that you are not just saving money but you are also reducing your carbon footprint.
  • As above, the scale buildup on appliances such as boilers, washing machines and kettles is a huge problem in hard water areas meaning that they do not work efficiently. Eventually, the buildup will be as such that it will cause the equipment to stop working completely so that you will end up needing to buy a new one. This means that more appliances will be thrown out into tips and landfills, leading to manufacturers supplying an ever-growing number of replacements. Whilst nothing lasts forever, using soft water will significantly improve the lifetime of appliances, preventing them from prematurely entering the waste stream.
  • In the past couple of years there has been a big focus on buying pre-loved clothing instead of new due to the vast amount of water cotton needs to grow and the environmental impact of factories producing cheap, ‘throw away’ fashion. The simple solution to reducing the amount of clothes and other fabric items that need to be produced is to wear and use items which are already in existence. These items do however need to be kept looking good as well as clean but washing with hard water can cause problems. Hard water contains mineral deposits which are rough on fabrics causing them to wear faster and fade. These minerals can also trap dirt and soap in the fabrics as these are not easily rinsed away leaving them looking dingy and dull, feeling rough and ready for the rubbish tip much sooner. Softened water however can increase the life of frequently washed fabrics by 20-40%, meaning that they can be worn and enjoyed for far longer.

Good for your bank account

  • Using water filters to filter tap water is much cheaper than buying bottled water. You do not need to buy plastic bottles and can keep refilling your glass or refillable bottle instead. By having a water filtration system installed you will be saving yourself lots of money all whilst drinking higher quality water that has been filtered accordingly.
Softeners
  • The minerals in hard water means that it does not combine well with soap and does not create a proper lather. Whether you are cleaning yourself, your home or your clothes, this leads to you having to waste more and more detergent just to get a decent result. With soft water not only do you need to use a fraction of the amount but cleaning will be more effective. Due to the drying qualities of hard water you will also need to use more creams to moisturise. The limescale that builds up on surfaces and within appliances will also all need their own specialist cleaners. With soft water, this is not necessary. When you break it down, the cost savings with softeners to be made for an average family of four are significant.
  • The average household in a hard water area will gain at least 1.5mm of scale building within its internal plumbing over a year. As scale is an insulator, the heat of your system will be transferred less effectively. This means that a greater amount of energy is required. A build up of just 1.5mm is enough to reduce your heating efficiency by at least 12%. Boilers can be expensive to replace. It’s worth noting that in addition to saving energy, softened water is expected to preserve your boiler’s lifespan to the standard 15 years.
Boiling water taps
  • A boiling water tap is a very energy-efficient choice. On average, a kettle costs £0.02 pence every time it’s boiled. By comparison, a boiling water tap – on standby – costs £0.03 pence to run per 24 hours. They also save you from boiling more water than you really need – unlike a kettle – which you’ll typically fill halfway or full – you’ll only ever use the amount of water you need.

Good for your time

Softeners
  • Unlike soft water, hard water contains a high concentration of dissolved minerals such as calcium and magnesium. These minerals will cause limescale, water marks and soap scum to build up on surfaces, all of which can take a lot of scrubbing and harsh abrasive cleaning agents to remove. Even after cleaning, the surfaces can be left dull and without their natural shine. As the water softening process will remove the calcium and magnesium, you will no longer get this build up. Even better, over time the softened water will naturally dissolve away any deposits of limescale that you may start with meaning that it is a truly effortless way to keep your surfaces sparkling clean. Less buildup = less cleaning = more time for the more important things in life. What’s not to like?
Boiling water taps
  • It's fairly obvious that with boiling water available in an instant, there is no more waiting around for kettles and pots of water to boil. This makes cooking dinner and making hot drinks a far speedier affair leaving you more time to enjoy eating and drinking instead!
