What is an under sink water softener?
It's a smaller version of a traditional softener, sized to fit inside a standard kitchen base unit. It works on the same principle: ion exchange, where the calcium and magnesium that cause hardness are swapped for sodium held in a resin tank. The resin is regenerated with salt, which you top up every few weeks or months depending on use.
A typical unit measures around 40 to 50cm tall and fits comfortably in a standard 600mm cupboard. Most include a small brine tank built into the same housing, so there's no separate salt container to find room for.
