What is an under sink water softener?
An under sink water softener is a smaller version of a traditional water softener, sized to fit inside a standard kitchen base unit. It works on the same principle as a full-size softener: ion exchange, where calcium and magnesium ions in your water are swapped for sodium ions held in a resin tank. The resin is regenerated periodically using salt, which you top up every few weeks or months, depending on usage.
A typical under sink softener measures around 40 to 50cm tall and fits comfortably in a standard 600mm kitchen cupboard. Most units include a small brine tank built into the same housing, so there’s no separate salt container to find space for.
