Advice on Water Softeners - blog cover | advice on harvey water softeners guide

Thinking about investing in a Harvey Water Softener? As authorised agents and trusted installers across the South East, we’re here to break down exactly why Harvey is one of the most popular and reliable water softener brands in the UK—and why so many of our customers choose them.

From compact, non-electric systems to advanced twin-cylinder technology, Harvey Water Softeners deliver 24/7 softened water with no faff, no programming, and minimal maintenance.

Why Choose a Non-Electric Harvey Water Softener?

Harvey Water Softeners are non-electric, powered purely by your home’s water pressure. That means:

  • No complex settings or timers
  • No power consumption
  • No risk of electrical faults

Just set it up and let it get to work—quietly and efficiently in the background.

How Harvey’s Twin-Cylinder System Delivers Soft Water 24/7

Unlike single-cylinder softeners that pause during regeneration, Harvey’s twin-cylinder design guarantees continuous soft water, no matter the time of day.

  • Duplex parallel operation uses both tanks simultaneously for maximum flow
  • Seamless switching during regeneration means zero downtime
  • Ideal for larger homes, loft tanks, and high water usage households

What Salt Do Harvey Water Softeners Use?

Harvey Water Softeners are compatible with multiple salt types , offering flexibility and ease of use:

  • Mini curved block salt – Lightweight and easy to store.
  • 8kg block salt – Industry-leading capacity.

Each type is high-grade and designed to minimise waste while maximising performance.

Are Harvey Water Softeners WRAS Approved in the UK?

Yes—Harvey Water Softeners are fully WRAS approved, meaning they meet strict UK water regulation standards. That gives you peace of mind that your system is safe, legal, and compliant.

Designed to Fit Anywhere

The latest model, the Harvey Minimax Innova, is the most compact twin-cylinder softener on the market. It can fit:

  • Under most kitchen sinks
  • In utility rooms
  • Inside garages or lofts

This flexibility makes it ideal for modern homes with limited space.

Built for Modern Homes: Accurate Metering & Easy Salt Checks

Harvey softeners use a displacement meter—the same type trusted by UK water boards. It measures your usage precisely and regenerates only when needed, saving salt and water.

Checking salt is a breeze too, thanks to a clear-view lid—no fiddling, no guesswork.

More Harvey Water Softeners details: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the lifespan of a Harvey Water Softener?

Harvey systems are built to last 10–15 years with proper maintenance.

Can I use a Harvey softener with my combi boiler?

Yes—Harvey models are fully compatible with modern systems, including combi boilers and mega-flo setups.

What type of salt is best?

The Harvey range of water softeners use the highest quality grade of salt. The new Curved mini block salt is lighter and easier to store. They also produce industry leading 8kg block salt and the standard tablet salt.

How does it run?

The force of your own water powers the Harvey Water Softener, saving energy. It has no timers and does not need any complicated programming.

HOW DO THEY WORK?

Cylinder operation

Twin-tank water softeners often use a service / standby method, where one cylinder will always stand idle ready to take over when the other is exhausted. The Harvey™ Water Softener uses a duplex parallel method that allows both cylinders to be used, except for when one is regenerating. This results in a better flow rate.

Number of cylinders

All water softeners have either one or two cylinders to house the softening resin. Only those with two cylinders can guarantee softened water 24/7 as there is no downtime during the cleaning process, also known as regeneration. Those with two cylinders are also more efficient with salt usage.

Time vs Meter control

Budget water softeners will use a simple timer that requires regular programming, compared to a good quality water softener, like a Harvey™ Water Softener, that will monitor water usage with a meter and make adjustments based on your consumption.

Type of meter

The Harvey™ Water Softener uses a displacement meter that is also used by the Regional Water Boards for measuring household water supply. They are tried, tested and the most accurate and reliable type available.

How do you check the salt levels on a harvey water softener?

Salt needs to be checked regularly, so a simple solution is best. Some water softeners require the unit to be opened whereas others, such as the Harvey™, has a clear lid for easy viewing.

How big are harvey water softeners?

At one point water softeners would stick out through a hole in the kitchen surface, now-a-days they are a lot more compact. A Harvey™ Water Softener is designed to fit under the kitchen sink, meaning it can fit into many other convenient places in the home, such as in a garage, utility room or even loft if needed. The new Minimax Innova is the most compact twin cylinder water softener on the market.

Is programming required?

Electric water softeners will require setting up and programming for water usage, water hardness and some other settings. A non-electric water softener does the job for you with its factory preset, making it easier to use.

Do they meet modern standards?

The Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) is a mark of approval that demonstrates an item complies with the high standards set by water regulations published in 1999 in the UK. Enforced by the UK water supply companies, it covers all plumbing systems, water fittings and equipment supplied with water from the public water supply. It is a legal requirement for products installed in the UK to comply with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999.

Is Softened water guaranteed?

Single-tank water softeners can’t regenerate and soften your water at the same time, so there will be times that hard water flows into the system. If you’ve got loft tanks, the softness of your water can be compromised for days afterwards. Twin-tank water softeners. such as a Harvey™ Water Softener, don’t suffer from this problem, they keep softening 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

What is Maximum flow rate?

This figure indicates the maximum amount of water that can flow through your water softener in litres per minute. The higher this figure, the better your water softener can cope with power showers, combination boilers, mega-flo systems and high water usage like multiple showers being used at one time.

As authorised agents, we install a range of Harvey water softeners to suit a variety of households. Contact us to arrange a home survey and we will be able to recommend the best water softener solution for your needs.
