Why businesses need a commercial water softener

Kent sits on chalk and limestone, which means most of the county has hard water. That’s a minor inconvenience at home and a genuine operating cost for a business. Limescale builds up inside boilers and pipework, reducing efficiency and shortening the working life of expensive equipment. Commercial dishwashers, glass washers, coffee machines and steam ovens are all particularly exposed, since they rely on heat and pressure, both of which accelerate scale build-up.

Softened water fixes this at the point it enters the building. Appliances run more efficiently, use less energy, and last longer. Types of commercial water softeners we supply

Commercial systems work on the same ion exchange principle as a domestic softener, but scaled up and specified for continuous or high-volume use. The right type depends on how much water your business uses and whether supply can ever afford to stop.

Simplex systems run a single resin vessel and regenerate on a timer or by metered use. They suit businesses with predictable, moderate water use, such as smaller offices or standalone cafés, where a short regeneration window overnight is no issue.

Duplex systems use two vessels working in tandem, so one is always in service while the other regenerates. This gives an uninterrupted supply of soft water around the clock, which matters for anywhere running water-dependent equipment through the day and night, hotels, manufacturing lines, food production.

Where drinking water quality also matters, a softener is often paired with a reverse osmosis system, which polishes the softened water further for uses like ice machines, coffee equipment, or process water in manufacturing and testing environments.

Sizing: matching capacity and flow rate to your business

Getting the size right matters more in a commercial setting than a domestic one. Undersize a system and it can’t keep up with peak demand; oversize it and you’re paying for capacity you don’t need. Sizing comes down to two figures: your maximum expected daily usage, and the flow rate you need at peak times. Both vary a lot by business type.

Small businesses and offices

Offices, small retail units and standalone cafés typically have lower and more predictable usage. A simplex system, sized to daily litres rather than continuous flow rate, is usually enough, and gives the lowest install and running cost.

Hospitality, care and healthcare

Hotels, pubs, care homes and healthcare sites combine high daily usage with unpredictable peaks, morning check-out, a busy lunch service, a full laundry run, so systems here are typically duplex, sized generously against peak flow rate rather than average use. Water quality also tends to matter more directly to the customer experience: clear ice, better-tasting drinks, spotless glassware.

Manufacturing and industrial

Manufacturing and process environments often need the most precise specification, since the water isn’t just for cleaning, it’s an input to the product or process itself. Flow rate, pressure and purity all need to be specified against the equipment or process the water is feeding, which is why we survey rather than quote off a standard size.

We’re an authorised installer for every major commercial water softener brand, including Kinetico, EcoWater and Harvey, rather than a dealer tied to one manufacturer. Installation, servicing and salt delivery

We handle the whole job in-house: survey, supply, installation, and ongoing servicing, with our own engineers rather than subcontractors. That matters when something needs fixing quickly, since the person on site knows the system because we specified and installed it, not because they’re reading a manual for the first time.

Servicing is where a lot of commercial installs fall down elsewhere. Ours typically includes a full softener service and service kit (pistons, spacers and seals), filter changes for ice machines and coffee equipment where fitted, and breakdown cover, so a business isn’t caught out by an unplanned failure. We also run salt delivery and repair for systems we didn’t originally install.

Bennett Opie Ltd

Bennett Opie Ltd, founded in 1880, they are one of the oldest private family-owned food companies in the country and is based in Sittingbourne, Kent. They create, produce, import and distribute a high-quality range of food products for customers in the UK and around the world.

We were asked to provide a quotation for a new water softening system for their manufacturing facility. We recommended a 2″ Industrial Duplex water softener and agreed on installing a 2″ Clack WS2 500L Duplex system. There was some existing pipework already in place, but we needed to install a new bypass and individual in/out isolation valves. A 2″ inlet pre-filter system was also installed to remove sediment from the private water supply.

The equipment installed was:

• 2″ pre filter system for 5 micron sediment filter
• Clack WS2 500L Duplex water softener
• 2″ Water meter and control panel to Clack unit and slave vessel 

The schedule of works for this job involved:

• Connection of 2″ to hard feed and install bypass system with individual in/out isolation valve for pressure vessels
• Install Check valve on inlet
• Connect existing 1″ soft water feed to 2″ outlet
• Return feed into 2″ BSP male conenction
• Decommission and disconnect existing 1″ 60 litre Fleck 9000 Duplex

FloPlast

Also based in Sittingbourne, FloPlast is a well-established manufacturer and supplier of Plastic Building and Plumbing systems to the UK construction sector. The company originally specialised in Roofline products with an extensive range of Rainwater systems and PVC-UE Cellular Foam Fascia, Soffit & Cladding systems that provide maintenance-free solutions to both domestic and commercial buildings. I

We were asked to provide a water purification system for their new testing facility. This was required to feed a 200L cold tank and 200L hot tank and consisted of a pre-treatment ion exchange water softener and a Direct Flow Reverse Osmosis system. The resulting water would be below 20ppm purity. Our quote was based upon a maximum expected usage of 1,000 litres per day but we specified a system which would give up to 3,000 litres per day with a maximum direct flow rate of 100 litres per hour.

The equipment installed was:

• Clack WS1 simplex 50L water softener
• New 22mm bypass
• Robust 3000 RO unit

The schedule of works for this job involved:

• Install bypass set into existing plumbing
• Install and commission water softener and pre filter cartridges
• Install and commission Reverse Osmosis purifier
• Connect pipework to test bench
• Program configuration and put into service

Water softener systems are of vital importance in the hospitality sector. For a start, there are generally an awful lot of water outlets in the average hotel, as there are not only bathrooms connected to every room, but also kitchens, bars, restaurants and laundries to be considered.

With limescale and soap scum buildup potential in each of these areas, this will create a great deal of work for the cleaning staff to keep looking good as well as requiring a lot of cleaning materials and scale removers.
